Overview/Requirements – RAD Ballet Syllabus

Our continued agenda at SSoD, is to pioneer for the highest level of dance teaching and standards in Bermuda. Our credentials speak volumes, advocating for not only structured quality dance training but maintaining caliber expected. We follow the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), dance education programmes and qualifications.

SSoD & RAD guidelines, policies & procedures?

SSoD work within the guidelines set forth by The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). These include, respect to outline of Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and Total Qualification Time (TQT) which encompasses Guided Learning Hours (GLH) & ‘other learning’ guidelines for each grade level. Students are assessed at SSoD throughout the course of Term 1 and Term 2, prior to exam invitations as to their command of the curriculum, technicality and musicality. Attendance is vital if working towards eligibility for consideration for an exam or class award, as the syllabus is learned within the parameters of term dates set forth at beginning of SSoD’s school calendar year.

Students working towards eligibility for consideration (*Teacher recommended only) for RAD Exams/Class awards should attend 2 classes a week (in grades noted) to become adept with the syllabus at the applicable level.

* Teacher recommendation is required for all students to be entered into the exams or class awards.

Pre-Ballet

We introduce the children to the fundamentals of dance, improvising to music and learning simple direction from the teacher in preparation for RAD grade levels. Musicality and rhythm, creative imagery and mime are also explored as an introduction to classical ballet.

Progressing from Pre Ballet, children now start training in basic core RAD syllabus work. Upon entering the Primary level students will develop basic movement combinations and perform short dances in solo form.

Grades 1-2

Grades 1 & 2 help develop proper alignment, classical technique, appropriate timing and musicality. Character dance, based on folk dance, is also incorporated at this level, specifically Russian style in Grade 1 and Hungarian Peasant style in Grade 2.

Our Grade 1 is a 2 year combined syllabus and therefore separated into YR 1 & YR 2. For those just entering Grade 1 as succession from PRIMARY, please select GRADE 1 (YR 1) accordingly.

Grades 3-5

In Grades 3-5, classes commence with barre work, to warm-up and gain strength. Centre work consists of various exercises to further develop the student’s classical technique and vocabulary, musicality and artistic skills. Character dance continues to encourage posture, strength, co-ordination and musicality. Specifically, Ukrainian style in Grade 3, Hungarian Court dance or Tarantella in Grade 4 and Polish Court dance or Flamenco style in Grade 5.

Our Grade 5 is a 2 year combined syllabus and therefore separated into YR 1 & YR 2. For those just entering Grade 5 as succession from GRADE 4 please select GRADE 5 (YR 1) accordingly.

Grades 6-8

Grades 6-8 incorporate Classical Ballet, Free Movement and Character dance. Classical exercises continue to improve spacial awareness, orientation of the body and co-ordination. Fluidity of movement is now encouraged as style and maturity are both important in these grades. Free Movement exercises & dances incorporate movements from dance styles such as Contemporary and Classical Greek Dance. Character dance is developed further in all three grades.

Discovering Repertoire

The programme launched globally in early 2018.

A CLASSICAL BALLET PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME – ‘Creative’, ‘challenging’ and ‘inspiring’

Discovering Repertoire is an innovative new concept in training and assessment from the RAD. Suitable for students from ages 12 through to adult, the program caters for those with some prior ballet experience (1–2 years of study) through to those of a more advanced standard (upper grades/vocational grades). Students will learn and dance choreography that they have seen on the stage, set to music that they know and love.

The programme is based on modular assessment, to enable students to learn at their own pace. Students have the option of taking regulated examinations recognised at 3 levels on the UK qualifications framework.

Vocational Grades

For Vocational Grades, students are required to attend 2 vocational classes + 2 grade level classes per week to become adept with the syllabus at this level. Please ensure you select 4 classes (2 vocational classes + 2 grade classes) when registering. Vocational grades include Intermediate Foundation, Intermediate*, Advanced Foundation, Advanced 1 & Advanced 2.

The vocational syllabus is the continuation of classical ballet from previous grade work adding pointe and variations. Technical requirements, artistry, musicality and feeling is encouraged. Having developed strong posture and at the discretion of the teachers, students can now begin to train en pointe.

In these classes, the students will learn extensive ballet vocabulary and continue to develop core strength, movement, expression and pointe work, while refining techniques. Students are now challenged to perform at a very high standard. Students must enroll in the Advanced 2 Pointe class.

Pointe (Pre-Pointe - Advanced Pointe)

Pointe is an advanced version of classical ballet, which focuses heavily on alignment, extension, placement and technicality, on pointe. A student is ready for pointe after mastering fundamental ballet technique, which, is at the discretion of the teacher.

The class fuses the fundamentals of classical ballet technique and movement with structured improvisation, challenging dancers to explore quality of movement, texture, musicality, performance, thought and understanding. The class is framed with the unconventional in mind and allows both teacher and student the flexibility of interpretation of their artistry and twist on music. Whether, this is to Mozart or Marley, students will delve into the nuances of shape, movement, tone, beat and rhythm.

Suitable for dancers with a background in any technical ballet/dance who are looking to explore other forms of execution and adaptability.

This class is a joint Parent and toddler class.

Join us for a fun and interactive dance class for you and your little one! This class will help you to foster your child’s early learning and development in dance through collaboration and companionship of parent or adult in a creative, imaginative way. Our combo Jazz/Tap classes introduce and develop technique within each genre of dance. Tap has always been a true staple at The Somerset School of Dancing. We follow the ISTD syllabus with training focused on understanding of core techniques and accuracy, purpose and development of movements. Thus, providing a platform for students to develop rhythmic patterns and combinations, musicality, coordination and individual artistic style.

No prior experience needed – For our more ‘mature’ students – If you always wanted to learn the fundamentals of tap, this class is for you! Whether a complete novice or simply took a hiatus, this beginner level class will focus on proper instruction of how to articulate your feet and ankles as well as explore musicality, rhythm, and syncopation.

Since inception of the school, Jazz has always been a predominant genre offered to our students. Jazz is a stylized and technical form of dance that is best supported by a ballet foundation. Classes focus on principles of correct placement, line, movement, strength, conditioning, flexibility, leaps, turns, jumps, and choreography.

A style of expressive dance, Contemporary combines several elements of modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. There is an emphasis on expressing emotions and storytelling through free-flowing, languid movement and focus on versatility and improvisation.

Our Senior classes transition into advanced contemporary/lyrical work, with a focus on more complex floor and foot work, leaps and turns with development of individual and artistic style.

This class is highly recommended for all our students in Ballet Grades 3 & up.

These focused 45-minute classes pull from techniques and disciplines to hone strength and flexibility and increase range of motion. Students will learn how to safely stretch their legs, hips, shoulders, and back while at the same time building muscle control and balance. This class is also suitable for non-dancers.

Diversity encompasses a plethora of dance styles, which include, (but not limited to), syllabus work in Flamenco and ISTD Classical Greek as well as a mix of Conditioning and Yoga. This class is suitable for experienced or non-experienced dancers.

Flamenco

Flamenco dance is a highly-expressive, solo Spanish dance form, with roots in Indian, Arabic, and Spanish cultures and characterized by hand clapping, percussive, rhythmic footwork and intricate sweeping hand, arm and body movements.

ISTD Classical Greek

The dance form comes from Ancient Greece. It works on balance and harmony of the body, mind, and spirit. An expressive form of dance movement with focus on balance and control, relaxation, elevation, clarity of line, grace and ease of movement and musical understanding. Advanced work facilitates study of the visual arts, literature, mythology, stage movement and dramatic expression.

Due to requests from the community, our creative movement class was created as an alternative outlet for those students who are either home schooled or attend schools with freedom in their syllabus. Molded to touch on all aspects for dance/movement and performance, the students have honed the class into a versatile, creative and spirited hour, learning techniques in basic dance, song and performance.

Our Urban dance classes combine Hip Hop and Street Dance styles with a targeted approach to choreography and spirited performance. Our Junior class focuses on the basics of rhythm, musicality and footwork, while fostering a students individual ‘hip’ style and personality. The class is energetic and fun and gets kids moving!

Our Senior class incorporates more intricate choreography and movement. Improvisation, individual style, personality and yes ‘attitude’ are explored and encouraged. The students will have a chance to practice their flexibility, balance, coordination and performance skills.

Musical Theatre(Classes 2019/2020)

Musical Theatre

Our Musical Theatre classes have become a popular ‘breather’ for our students, an impetus and catalyst between our technical dance classes and a performance skill set of self esteem and awareness. Format includes ‘performance’ warm-up, songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance with development and emphasis in our Senior class on further learning performance skills such as story telling via theatrical techniques already learned.

When registering: Please advise office of any learning difficulties as students will be given scripts in class and on occasion will be read in open setting. If we are aware, we can confidentially appropriate class so as not to ostracize any student and be respectful of circumstances.

Each term (apart from Fall Term 2019*) , students perform in our end of term Mini Performances. This allows them the opportunity to showcase what they have learned throughout the term in a themed theatre setting, complete with costumes, stage props and ques!

SSoD have established an advanced class for those who wish to ‘hone’ their techniques in Musical Theatre. We will explore musical theatre through a variety of genres from cabaret through to contemporary pop musicals. This will encompass storytelling, vocal technique and movement skills all at the same time!

This class is perfect for those individuals who are involved in the local theatre scene and wish to utilize their craft within a class setting and/or work towards auditions and performance.

Theatrical Costume Design Class

SSoD have partnered with the talented Michelle Fray, who will instruct students in the fundamentals of sewing and pattern making, working towards a design and development of theatrical stage costumes.

This class is perfect for those students whose creative spark and interest in garment making, paired with the love of eccentric theatre, are merged in an educational but exciting class.

Students will create a piece each term (with one’s personal ability in mind) for any of our SSoD Mini Productions and/or Recital. This will allow them to showcase what they have created while understanding the fundamentals of construction and use in a practical setting.

Reinventing The Art Of Dance: A Somerset School Of Dancing Philanthropic Initiative. 

‘Para’ouette’ (dance without denial),  will provide FREE, adaptive dance classes that allow the physically-challenged to experience the joy of dance and empower them to increase their physical, emotional & spiritual well-being, – enhancing & strengthening their mind, body & spirit through dance.

Dance is an art that involves the entire body. A feat of mental and physical strength, the art of dance is traditionally seen as a craft involving people of a specific build, form, and ability. But as dance evolves more each day, this narrow view is expanding to include people of all shapes, sizes, and abilities. Please contact the office for further details. A fun, engaging, low-impact workout class that utilizes cardio exercises, free-style dance  movements and interval stretching, to increase fitness and stamina, lose body fat and improve cardiovascular efficiency. No judgement – for us ladies who have so much going on and just need the motivation. Are you returning to exercise after a hiatus or simply prefer a less intense, fun fitness workout? This class is for you!

This class requires participants to bring their own yoga mat for any floor work.

Under the direction of Miss Von-Rica, a fitness enthusiast herself, this hour-long class develops balance, core conditioning (glutes and abs) and functional strength. Often commences with dynamic stretching, followed by a wide variety of high energy cardio interval training and various types of intense routines. Goals are used to lose body fat, increase cardiovascular efficiency, increase strength, endurance and establish a routined, fitness class to evaluate one’s own progression.

This class requires participants to bring their own yoga mat for any floor work.

COREWX
Suitable for ages: 18 yrs & up
Class times: TUESDAY: 6:15PM - 7:15PM

Students can receive instruction outside of group classes in a private setting. These sessions can be designed for individual growth, improving technique, building core strength or exam preparation. Check parent portal for assigned dates and times available or contact office to enquire further.
